Dennis Rainey: It's important for a husband and a wife to be genuine with one another. In fact, we need the kind of honesty that Oliver Cromwell, the British statesman, once demonstrated when he was posing for a portrait. He looked at the painting and then rebuked the artist for making him look too good. He said to the artist, "When you paint me, you paint me warts and all."
The kind of vulnerability Cromwell was willing to demonstrate is what every married couple needs. Our marriages will grow as we open up about our feelings, hurts and dreams.
One final thought. There's no better place for two people to experience authenticity than marriage. There's no air brushing faults and removing blemishes here. It's life, up close and personal. That's the way God intended it.
