Dennis Rainey: Even as adults, some people are still afraid to go into the attic.

Guest: We never went in the attic. It was a little bit scary. It was dark, because we had to take a flashlight with us. It was hot, dirty. Just didn't want to deal with the junk that was up there.[ Read Full Transcript ]

Dennis Rainey: As a young boy, I was absolutely terrified of going into the attic in our home. I was sure that some creature lurked in that creepy room upstairs.

As adults, our fears can be different, but just as imposing. I have a corner of my mind that's like an attic. I'll bet you do, too. We use it to store memories of failures, hurts, and critical words from others. It can be a scary place.

But you know what? You and your mate help each other face down those fears. When I was a child, I was downright courageous when I entered the attic with a friend. In the same way, your self - confidence will grow when you and your spouse deal with painful memories as a team.

One final thought. Your mate needs you to be a supportive, patient friend. When he opens up about past hurts and failures, respond with unconditional love and acceptance.

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.
