Dennis Rainey: Travel is a big challenge for families in the military, and increasingly, for many in the business world as well. Here's a few tips for reducing the stress your family can feel if you have to be away.

First, prepare for your trip well. If you're rushed and stressed, you're a lot less likely to treat your family with kindness.

Second, use the telephone. When I'm away, I try to call home once a day, even more often when I know a lot is going on back home.

Finally, it's always nice to bring home a surprise. It can be as simple as a letter composed in a hotel room. Let your spouse and children know you were thinking about them on your trip.

One final thought. Travel is a necessary part of life for many of us. But if you ever sense that a demanding travel schedule is threatening your family relationships, maybe it's time for you to start looking for another job.

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.
