Dennis Rainey: "For this cause," the Bible says, "a man shall leave his father and mother, cleave to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."

Guest: It's a lot harder to cleave than to leave, know what I mean? 'Cause leavin' is just movin' out, but cleavin' is a lot more than just movin' in!![ Read Full Transcript ]

Dennis Rainey: Well, I think leaving is more than just moving out, too, but he's right about cleaving.

Cleaving is like forming a new alloy...it's melting two separate entities together to form some new metal that really has resilience and strength. Cleaving means to form a permanent bond. It's an unbreakable commitment.

But notice this. If you don't leave, the cleaving will be incomplete. We leave one relationship and total dependence there to establish a complete commitment to a new person. We literally burn our bridges back home.

One final thought. If a husband and wife follow the progression God prescribes, there won't be any chances of bailing out, no escape clauses, no hatches to jump out of in a marriage relationship.

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.
