Dennis Rainey: In your marriage, is it ever possible that you could feel alone?

Guest: My husband worked a lot and I was at home by myself a lot taking care of the children, and so, it was hard for me to get out, of course, you know to even go to the store, because I had a newborn and a two-year old, and then two years later I had another one. I felt isolated a lot.

Dennis Rainey: I have some friends who had to overcome that kind of isolation in their marriage. The newly-married wife felt unknown. The husband on the other hand felt uncared for. Instead of enjoying the blessing of companionship, instead they felt isolated. Often when problems like this occur in a marriage, the couple thinks that having a child will solve these problems and cement their hearts together.

However, if a couple is not "one" before they begin having children, they shouldn't expect a child to draw them closer together. The opposite is more likely -- the weakness of the relationship will be revealed or even exaggerated by the parenting process.

One final thought. Don't ever count on a child to solve your marriage troubles. Instead, choose today to move toward your spouse and away from isolation. Discover, and enjoy the marriage that God intends for you to have.

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real Family Life.
