Dennis Rainey: Did you know that a husband is to love and lead his wife just like Christ loved and led the church?

Guest: Well the role of a husband is to be the spiritual leader of the home. The protector of the family. The companion of the wife. The shepherd of the children.

Dennis Rainey: All week we've been discussing God's design for our marriages. Today, we'll talk about the last two Biblical concepts of marriage.

God's design is for the husband to be a loving, sacrificial servant who gives himself to his wife as Christ did for the church. How did Christ love the church? He denied himself. He served others. And, He went to the cross on her behalf.

A wife is to be a supportive helper in marriage. The word helper doesn't mean to be a slave. She is to come alongside and support her husband, to believe in him and cheer him on in all he does.

One final thought. John Piper writes, "In the home when a husband leads like Christ and a wife responds like the bride of Christ, there is harmony and mutuality that is more beautiful and more satisfying than any pattern of marriage created by man."

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real Family Life.
