Dennis Rainey: Praying together as a couple is the most important spiritual discipline in marriage. Unfortunately, many men are afraid to take the lead in praying with their wives.

I know of a woman who wished for years that her husband would pray with her. They were faithful churchgoers but had no shared prayer life. One day, though, he surprised her by taking her by the hands and tenderly asking her if she would pray with him. They bowed their heads, and this private, reserved man began to pray for his wife.

I believe that bells rang and choirs sang in heaven because of this man's obedience in inviting God into the center of this marriage relationship.

One final thought. Men, I feel that it's our responsibility as husbands to initiate prayer in our marriages. If you're not in the habit of praying with your wife, why don't you try it tonight?

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.
