Dennis Rainey: There's one word a husband and a wife should never, ever say to one another. Can you guess what that word is?

Guest: When we got married, I said, "Well, we'll give it our best and if it doesn't work, we can go our separate ways." And she went, "No. This is it. There is no other one for me."[ Read Full Transcript ]

Dennis Rainey: Good for her! If you're married, there's one word you need to strike from your vocabulary. It's the word "divorce." Never threaten to leave or divorce your mate.

I once knew a husband that often threatened to leave his wife in order to gain leverage during their arguments. Needless to say, their marriage was not characterized by unity or loving closeness. That's probably because that kind of threat rarely brings about change in another person. It simply creates cracks in their commitment, and it fuels fear.

One final thought. When a misunderstanding arises in your relationship, remind your mate that you intend to remain loyal and that you aren't going anywhere. This reassurance of commitment will strengthen your resolve to work through difficulties in your marriage.

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.
