Dennis Rainey: Have you noticed that divorce doesn't seem to upset us like it used to?
Announcer: He is a successful businessman. She is a celebrated actress. Who gets the children? Who gets which house? As assets are divided, we'll listen in, today, on ... Divorce Court.
Dennis Rainey: That television show makes divorce sound like a fun thing. But consider this, children of divorced parents are four times more likely to commit a violent crime. Children of divorced parents are more likely to be living in poverty, dropping out of school, and abusing alcohol. Hundreds of thousands of young people every year, begin their marriage with a legacy of divorced parents.
We have become a culture of divorce. Not so long ago, marriage breakup was the exception to the norm. It was a shameful blight to a family. Now, after we have spent years observing what the ax of divorce has done to the family tree, the marriage that lasts feels like the exception.
One final thought. We must reaffirm and reclaim the sanctity of marriage. It's time for each of us to embrace and proclaim God's sacred view of marriage -- as well as His hatred for divorce.
I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real Family Life.
