Dennis Rainey: If you feel overwhelmed by the needs of your spouse, I'm here to tell you there is hope!

Guest: I'd done everything I could possibly think of to make that woman happy. And I thought she had done everything to make me miserable.
And it wasn't working! I mean, that woman had so many needs that there was no way I could meet them, even if I had a warehouse full of stuff to meet needs with.[ Read Full Transcript ]

Dennis Rainey: I know that couple, and I know why they're speaking in the past tense: because now they've turned to Jesus Christ, the only Source of all true fulfillment.

In many marriages, spouses stop trying to meet each other's needs. I can think of several reasons they do. First, we get lazy. We forget we're still competing for our mate's affection. Number two, we get distracted. Especially us task-oriented people. We don't focus on our relationship like we should. Third, many couples honestly don't know what to do. They need help. And finally (this is a BIG one), unresolved conflict. This covers everything from anger and unforgiveness to serious issues from the past that have never been dealt with.

One final thought. The reason I said there's hope is this: no matter how great your needs are (or your spouse's), God is bigger. So count the cost, deny yourself, and follow Jesus!

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real, need-meeting FamilyLife.
