Dennis Rainey: I have a question for you. Are your roots deep enough to withstand the storms of life?

Guest: My mom's diagnosis with cancer and then her subsequent death was the deepest valley we've been through. And as I look back on what sustained us during those days, it was the truth of God's Word, where Jesus said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."[ Read Full Transcript ]

Dennis Rainey: You know, trees and families both depend on their root systems for their strength.

I'll never forget the tornado that ripped through our neighborhood back in 1982. I noticed that many huge pine trees were completely uprooted, while the majestic oaks only suffered a few broken limbs. The difference was in their roots. Oak trees plunge their roots deep into the soil, enabling them to withstand even a tornado's fury. But pines, like some families, have shallow and weaker root systems.

One final thought. If your family's root system needs some deepening, you'll need to develop strong relationships with God and others. So sink your roots deep into His word and His people, and you'll be able to withstand the storms of life.

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.
