Dennis Rainey: You don't keep score against your own teamates.

Guest: After two years of marriage, we've really...I really think it's almost been like learning to ride a tandem bicycle. It's really what we've struggled with, is just becoming a team and doing our different roles together.[ Read Full Transcript ]

Dennis Rainey: Do you feel like you're becoming your spouse's teammate? Or are the two of you more like opponents?

We act like opponents when we keep score against one another. When we listen to that little voice that says things like "Why should I make the bed this morning when she wouldn't bring me a cup of coffee last night?" Or, "Why shouldn't I buy this outfit when he spent fifty dollars last weekend on golf?" Ouch.

Each of us needs to say to our mate, "I will love you without demanding an equal amount in return." When you and your spouse both give, without expecting anything back, you'll begin to see greater teamwork in your marriage.

One final thought. We need to throw away our score cards and focus on our mate's needs rather than our own. How can you encourage and serve your teammate today?

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.
