Dennis Rainey: What types of dates did you and your spouse go on before you married?

Guest:  Well, before we got married, my fiance and I would dig around in the cushions of the couch in my apartment, and we'd scrape together enough change to go to the 99-cent cinema around the corner. Dennis Rainey: When my wife, Barbara and I dated during the summer of 1971, we did all sorts of things together - picnics, hikes, long drives and long talks. No two dates were ever the same.

Once we got married, we still planned some exciting dates, but maintaining romance became more of a challenge. Here's why. Young children wore us out. We faced financial pressures and poor health. Our schedules were overcrowded. Later, we had teenagers that never wanted to go to bed.

I'm sure you could make a list of those small things that threaten romance in your marriage. Every couple faces them.

One final thought. This is the perfect week to set aside those distractions and cultivate some romance with your spouse. Let me challenge every husband. Today, why don't you call your wife and ask her out on a date? I guarantee you she'll say yes, especially if you get the babysitter.

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.
