Dennis Rainey: Did you know God wants you to give thanks...no matter what?

Guest: I believe it's hardest to take criticism and be thankful for it, 'cause you can continue to grow, but it's hard to be thankful for it at first.

It's hardest for me to be thankful when I'm struggling with an 18-year-old son that's causing me fits.[ Read Full Transcript ]

Dennis Rainey: Hmm. Whether it's good days or bad, problems at work or at home, flat tires, allergies, umpires with "poor vision" at Little League games, or even teenage attitudes, God tells us in the New Testament, "In everything give thanks, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

I can think of at least three reasons God wants us to be thankful through all circumstances and conditions. First, giving thanks expresses faith -- faith in a competent and trustworthy God! Second, when we determine to be thankful in all things, we start showing the fruit of right thinking and right living. And that doesn't come naturally...it's a work of God in our hearts. Third, God wants us to be thankful at all times because He wants us to move beyond the "small stuff" of life to be warriors for Him.

One final thought. As Barbara and I have practiced giving thanks continually, it's become easier and easier over the years...even though life's circumstances have not.

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.
