Bob Lepine: This gentleman told us he fasts each year during the season of Lent.
Guest: Sometimes I'll just fast one day a week, sometimes I'll do an extended fast, sometimes it might just be from coffee or from sweets. Obviously, it's to prepare my heart for Easter and the celebration of Christ's resurrection.[ Read Full Transcript ]
Dennis Rainey: Today is Ash Wednesday. It marks the beginning of a 40-day period between now and Easter, when many Christians fast.
You know, fasting is one of the forgotten disciplines of the Christian faith. I was turned on to fasting about a decade ago, when Dr. Bill Bright went on a 40-day fast of nothing but fruit juice, pleading with God in prayer to bring revival to our land.
When we fast, we willingly abstain from a particular food (perhaps from TV or sex)…something specific. Instead, we focus on prayer and our relationship with God. It's a way of reminding ourselves of how dependent on Him we really are.
One final thought. Why don't you and your family take some time tonight and discuss what one simple thing you might give up between now and Easter? If you go through with it as a family, I promise you, the things you'll learn about yourself and your children will truly be worth any discomfort you might feel.
I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.
