Dennis Rainey: At our house, we celebrate Thanksgiving with five kernels of corn.

Guest: (Brittish accent) I don't know what Thanksgiving's all about. Giving thanks for the birth of Christ? Isn't it? Is it nothing to do with the fact that it's before Christmas? We don't have Thanksgiving. I don't know what it is.[ Read Full Transcript ]

Dennis Rainey: She's a good sport. We can't expect someone from England to understand all the details of an American holiday. The sad thing is, many Americans don't know what Thanksgiving is all about, either: it's about giving thanks.

We've developed a tradition in the Rainey household that helps us keep the "thanks" in Thanksgiving. Each member of our family starts with five kernels of corn on their plate. This is to remind us of the daily rations the Pilgrims had during lean years. Before we start eating, we pass around a basket. We take turns throwing in a piece of corn and giving thanks for something we have.

One final thought. Thanksgiving is just a couple days away. Start planning now and use this year's celebration to develop a sense of gratitude in your family.

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.
