Guest: What I like about Thanksgiving is, it's just a time to reflect. It's not just about eating the turkey, and having the Thanksgiving dinner. I look at it as a time to sit back with friends and family and just reflect on what God has done for us.[ Read Full Transcript ]

Dennis Rainey: I like that. Her words stand in contrast to the way a lot of people approach Thanksgiving. You'll hear people all the time calling it "Turkey Day."

But how would you feel if somebody referred to your birthday as "cake and ice cream day"? You'd probably feel like they were focusing on the wrong thing.

Now, there's nothing wrong with enjoying turkey this Thursday, but let's keep the purpose of the day in perspective. The Thanksgiving tradition began when the pilgrims gave thanks to God for providing for them in a new land. The holiday serves to remind us of our need for God, and our need to give Him the appreciation He deserves.

One final thought. As you prepare to celebrate this Thursday with your family, I want you to think about ways you can incorporate a spirit of true thanksgiving to God for all that He's done. Let's have thankful hearts.

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.
