Dennis Rainey: What would it take to convince you to stop celebrating Thanksgiving?

Guest: Thanksgiving is the most special time of the year for our family, when, it seems that most of us can get together. That's a special time that we just cherish as a family, and there is no way that I could give up Thanksgiving.[ Read Full Transcript ]

Dennis Rainey: I once read of a survey in which people were asked if they'd be willing to take $1,000 to give up celebrating Thanksgiving with their families. To their credit, most declined the money, but I find it ironic that we so often get lost in the trappings of the turkey, the gravy and mashed potatoes, that we often forget that we should be focusing on relationships!

When was the last time you purposefully set about to express appreciation for members of your family?

I realize that doing this might be uncomfortable, for some it might be impossible. But sometimes we need to stretch ourselves and say those things that need to be said.

One final thought. Over the next few days, why don't you go out of your way to say to someone in your family, "I'm truly thankful for you, and here's a reason why." This Thanksgiving could be about more than just food and football.

I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.
