Dennis Rainey: The pilgrims are famous for throwing feasts, but they also sometimes went hungry.

Guest:  The pilgrims ate, according to my first grade teacher, turkey and pumpkin pie (laugh). Fish, corn. I'm sure whatever they harvested that year. Squirrels, deer, pine nuts.[ Read Full Transcript ]

Dennis Rainey: Pine Nuts? I think we all have a mental picture of the pilgrims feasting during the first Thanksgiving. But there were times when they had virtually nothing to eat. At one time on their journey to the New World, the pilgrims had strict rations, and ate only five kernels of corn a day.

Those kernels of corn have inspired one of our family's traditions at Thanksgiving. Each member of our family starts our Thanksgiving meal with five kernels of corn on his plate. We then go around the table, and toss a kernel of corn into the basket, and then say something for which we're thankful for during the past year. This simple activity creates a spirit of thankfulness that I wish we could capture more often.

One final thought. Today, I hope your holiday is about more than just a big meal. Let's take some time to show true appreciation for all God has given us.

I'm Dennis Rainey, have a thankful Thanksgiving, because that's Real Family Life.
