Dennis Rainey: Are you keeping a record of all the important events happening in your home?
Guest: Mother would write daily on a calendar. Just little tidbits, things that would happen throughout the day. And then put it all on paper for us children. And that's as much of a treasure as anything that could be passed on.
Dennis Rainey: A collection of memories like that is a treasure. I'm thankful that my wife, Barbara, has served as the memory collector for our family. If no one assumes this role for your family, you can lose thousands of wonderful moments.
Record keeping helps memories to last. That can involve having a video camera ready. But it can also mean hanging on to concert programs, newspaper articles, and school assignments.
In our house two entire sections of bookshelves hold our family scrapbooks. They begin when we were single. Each year since 1972 has a book dedicated to it. These books log the "official, authorized" history of our family. They are absolutely priceless.
One final thought. History is being made in your home all the time. If you record those events now, you'll treasure them later.
I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.
