How to Lead Stepping Up

Whether you’re a pastor with years of experience, a men's ministry leader, or just a regular guy who wants to grow spiritually and help others do the same, Stepping Up® was designed for you. Each leader kit comes with everything you need to lead a men's study group or men's event: DVDs with the teaching content, a leader's guide or host guide, and a copy of the participant workbook. In addition, you will find helpful information on how to host the event or series and promotional tips and tools on this website.

ROLE OF THE LEADER

Hundreds of hours of planning and thought were put into the teaching content as well as the workbooks for Stepping Up. As important as these tools are for the journey of discovery that the men in your group will undergo, your leadership is just as critical for bringing about real life change.

You are the connection between the ideas that are being taught and the relationships that will help the ideas stick. Since the teaching content is on video, you simply play the DVDs and then facilitate the discussions or exercises as prompted on screen. Even if that’s all you do, great things can happen in the lives of your men. But you also have an amazing opportunity to take your group deeper than they could ever go on their own.

The leader's guide in the video series kit and the host guide in the video event kit will give you tips and directions for making the most of your time together. Of foremost importance is the influence you will have through leading by example. If you want men to think deeply about the personal exercises and during the group discussion, then make sure your effort matches what you want from them.

Regarding group discussion times, remember the two Ts:

  • Transparency—Be open with men about your own journey, including the struggles you have faced and the questions you have wrestled with. Of course, be careful not to share too much too soon, or you might shut down the guys who are hesitant to talk.
  • Trust—Men will only go deep with those they trust. Start by asking yourself, Am I trustworthy? Can a guy believe that his secrets are safe with me? Also, establish the importance of confidence during the group discussion time. Make sure men know that what is said in group discussion stays in the group.
