What are you longing for?
What if your deepest longings—and hurts and struggles—weren’t random at all?
In their book, Free to Thrive, Ben Bennett and Josh McDowell identify seven core relational needs they call the “seven longings.” But these longings aren’t just random, they’re God-given needs that anchor our sense of worth and guide how we relate to others.
For each longing, Ben defines the need, provides Scriptural affirmation, and tells us what it looks like when this is fulfilled. For example:
Acceptance: to be included, loved, and approved of as you are, no matter what.
Romans 15:7 (NIV) says “Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.”
When someone experiences this longing fulfilled, it communicates “I’M VALUED.”
