Finding Our Confidence

Foundational Principle:

We trust Jesus in everything, and He gives us courage, clarity, and faith.

Scripture to Begin:
Hebrews 13:6

So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

Learning

Do you ever think,

“I’m just way too busy to reach out to my neighbor.”

“I don’t know enough about God to share with others.”

“My house is a mess and my children are all over the place. I think there are much more qualified people to work with families.”

“People don’t really want to talk about Jesus.”

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by these thoughts.

Research shows that nearly 84% of non-Christians today indicate a positive view of Jesus and would gladly welcome having a spiritual conversation. Notice we said conversation. What people don’t want is someone preaching to them or trying to force their beliefs. They don’t want someone to come in with an agenda. They want to talk like normal people.

But we often convince ourselves that we can’t do this and that people aren’t interested, but that’s simply UNTRUE! We must challenge our negative thoughts and focus on the reality of God’s kingdom. We do this by meditating on the truth found in God’s word. Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV) to “destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.”

Here are some verses to reflect on when faced with the anxiety of talking to someone about faith.

Isaiah 26:3-4

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. 4  Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.

Romans 8:31

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Philippians 4:6-8

[D]o not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Ephesians 2:10

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Stop listening to those internal voices that cause pessimism, apprehension, and inaction. Let God speak to you by His Spirit and guide you back to the truth. Embrace these realities as you step out in faith to share the good news with others.

Reflection

As you spend time with Jesus, ask Him to show you what thoughts fill your mind. Write down any negative or false beliefs you have in the “myths” column. Next, find Scriptures that might speak truth to what you interpret about yourself or your circumstances. Meditate on these verses or memorize them.

Applying What We Learn

Pray for opportunities to live out the truth you find in the verses you wrote down. What step of faith is God asking you to take in light of what the Bible says?
