Selecting a Few

Foundational Principle:

All the people we minister with and to will play a different part in God’s kingdom. Finding people who will become multiplying disciples is a strategic approach.

Scripture to Begin:
1 Corinthians 12:17-18

17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell?

18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.

Learning

A disciple is not just a Christian or a learner, but a follower: one who applies what he has learned from the life of Jesus. The gospels demonstrate Jesus’ plan for continuing his mission after death. By selecting 12 men to observe, learn, and minister with him, Jesus ensured the gospel’s spread.

Selecting disciples is a deliberate process. Even Jesus took the time and effort to get away for an entire night before He selected the twelve apostles. And going against conventional wisdom, Jesus often seemed to choose those who were least qualified. Paul chose young Timothy as well as Aquilla and Priscilla.

People chosen as disciples were typically:

  1. Faithful – Willing to show up regularly
  2. Available – Make meeting together a priority
  3. Intentional – Desire to share the gospel and build up others
  4. Teachable – Willing to grow in humility
  5. Heart of God – Spiritually hungry

As you think about New Testament disciples, who in your community meets the above criteria? Who are you currently working with that displays these characteristics?

Consider:

  • Attendees of small group studies
  • Participants in men’s or women’s events at church
  • Attendees of marriage or parenting groups
  • Mom’s group members
  • People who expressed interest at Weekend to Remember
  • Individuals referred by a FamilyLife Field Advisor or a local volunteer director
  • People with stories of amazing life-change
  • People you serve with in your church
  • People who have asked to be coached or mentored
  • Couples interested in joining a local FamilyLIfe team
  • Individuals who have a heart for sharing the gospel with others
  • People wanting to help others grow in their faith

We aim to equip families to reach those outside the church with the gospel, not just build up the church for its own sake. Consider the FAITH acronym when identifying potential disciples.

Reflection

It is often said that we can’t give away that which we don’t possess ourselves. As you look at the FAITH acronym, how does this describe your relationship with Jesus? Are there any of these elements that might be missing?

Applying What We Learn

Think about people in your church or community that would benefit from going through this journal. Could you challenge one person to go through this material with you?
