Day 7: Why Your Rearview Mirror Matters
I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that you have done; I ponder the work of your hands.
— Psalm 143:5
The word “remember” appears over 200 times in the Bible. Remembering must be important to God, perhaps because He knows how prone we are to forget.
The Israelites, for example, forgot the slavery of Egypt from which they’d been rescued (see Numbers 11:5). They forgot God’s sheer power and care when He obliterated their enemies at the Red Sea—which cost them seeing the Promised Land in their lifetime (Numbers 14).
Failing to recall God’s goodness in our marriages can be a loss for your relationship, too. Remember:
- Why did you fall in love with your spouse?
- What plans and dreams did you have for your life together?
- What obstacles have you overcome?
- What milestones have you marked together―from exciting adventures like moves and job changes to challenging seasons like miscarriages and caring for aging parents?
How has God used these events to draw you closer together and/or alter the course of your lives?
Remember the story God’s been writing for the two of you.
Praying together for our marriage
He prays: Purpose before God that the two of you will take time to remember what He has done in your lives together. Thank Him for one specific memory.
She prays: Ask God to help the two of you to trust Him, even when He allows difficulties into your lives. Thank Him for working all things for His purposes.
GOING DEEPER
Read “Memories That Make Us One”. Take some time with your spouse and make a list of your favorite memories. Be sure to note why these particular memories stand out. Enjoy the time together. If you have children, share your list with them.
