Day 3: Your Choice Is...

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
— Romans 5:8

When one of you acts short-tempered or selfish, the other has a choice: punish (giving what you feel is deserved) or show grace (undeserved kindness).

Which would you rather receive?

Grace in action can be as simple as holding your tongue, listening to what’s being communicated (instead of how), giving a hug, or encouraging your spouse.

Grace seeks to understand rather than be proven right.

In its heartbeat, grace trusts God rather than ensuring our version of justice is carried out in the moment. It allows room for successes, failures, and even the occasional defeat. In a grace-filled marriage, you “count others more significant than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3).

Jesus’ unfair death for His enemies motivates. As we deepen our understanding of what He laid down, it becomes easier to play out that brand of grace in marriage.

Praying together for our marriage

He prays: Thank God for the grace you have received through Christ. Ask Him to help you both to be grace-givers, making your home a haven of peace.

She prays: Thank God for the grace you have received through Christ. Ask Him to help you both be true encouragers to each other, ready to forgive and eager to help.

GOING DEEPER

Every marriage needs a sense of humor, some nitty-gritty how-to’s, and a good dose of hope. So we’ve cobbled together short email devotions for the messy, hard, and beautiful “I Do’s” you say every day.
