Joel and Vaneetha Risner

Joel and Vaneetha Risner understand suffering, as Joel’s late wife Barb died of cancer and Vaneetha lost a newborn son, has a progressive debilitating disease, and went through an unwanted divorce.

They live in Raleigh, North Carolina where they’ve been married for eight years and have a blended family with four adult daughters: Ashley, Emily, Katie, and Kristi.

Joel is a senior R&D staff member in radiation analysis at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Vaneetha writes about how Christ meets us in suffering. She writes regularly for Desiring God and on her website; her latest book is a Bible Study, Desperate for Hope: Questions We Ask God in Suffering, Loss and Longing.
