Day 18: The “D” Word

So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.
—Matthew 19:6

Sure. It’s culturally acceptable, even sometimes encouraged. But divorce isn’t the easy out it’s often presented to be.

God considers married couples bound by not just the law of state, but His own (Romans 7:2). We hold a high view of the sacredness of marriage because God does. Like the rest of us, divorce is never God’s best-case scenario. It is not simple, comforting, or convenient.

Unless you find yourself in a unique, extreme situation (like an abusive relationship), toss the “D” word from your vocabulary. Divorce shouldn’t be leveraged as a threat.

Instead, pray together that God would protect you from believing lies about divorce as a repair option.

Praying together for our marriage

He prays: Ask God to protect your marriage from stray thoughts of divorce and to give you a lifelong commitment to each other.

She prays: Ask God to give you both an understanding and forgiving heart, knowing that your marriage will need these sometimes.
